So in the meantime, the Condé Nast Union members have been assigned in recent weeks to a "centralized team" under Chris DiPresso, VP of content finance and operations. They were given assignments they were told were consistent with their skills, but not given firm deadlines or told what they were meant for. Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch in November said the company would lay off 5% and shift focus to support short-form video, subscriptions, and e-commerce. Some believe the company is using the "rubber room" move to demoralize people and get them to leave the company on their own.

Four years after a racial reckoning roiled Condé Nast's Bon Appétit, insiders worry that planned cuts could undo a fragile rebuilding effort. Included in that figure are 94 members, or 17%, of Condé Nast Union, which covers around 550 people across a dozen titles, including Vanity Fair, Vogue, and GQ. The Test Kitchen also benefited from a home cooking boom in the pandemic. But by August 2020, 10 of 13 members of the Test Kitchen had left. Members of the BA Test Kitchen in February 2020.

In 2022, the Utah legislature banned transgender girls from high school girls’ sports. In August 2022, a Utah judge granted a preliminary injunction allowing trans girls to compete on girls’ teams after the parents of two trans girls filed a lawsuit. But as long as transgender girls’ gender identities are policed, cisgender girls will continue to have theirs policed as well. “I avoided athletic activities out of terror, not disinterest,” one participant said (a new study published last month also found that trans girls are primarily avoiding sports out of fear of harassment). If cisgender girls avoid sports out of these fears as well, they stand to be similarly negatively impacted.

The wintry mess left both parties racing to rewrite last-minute campaign plans and sophisticated models to understand how the storm might affect turnout. But many Republican voters still prefer to vote on Election Day, and their party is accustomed to closing a gap. The party has won nearly every major election on Long Island since 2021, partly on the strength of its turnout operation. Peter T. King, a former Republican congressman, conceded that the snow could cost his party a couple of percentage points. Still, he predicted that the recently revived Nassau County Republican machine was up to the task.

CNN —A group of 19 predominantly Democratic lawmakers is calling on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to provide answers about why he bypassed Congress last month to approve arms sales to Israel. The top US diplomat made two emergency determinations in December to immediately approve the transfer hundreds of millions of dollars in military equipment to Israel. In their letter, the lawmakers noted the rarity of administrations using emergency declarations to immediately approve arms sales without congressional approval. “Use of a national emergency waiver does not exempt the U.S. government from assessing whether arms sales are consistent with” those standards, they wrote. I would say that the process that the secretary followed and the process that we follow here at the State Department is the process that the law actually prescribed,” Miller said at a State Department briefing.

The House passed a resolution in support of Israel in the wake of the Hamas attack. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a resolution in support of Israel by an overwhelmingly 412-10-6 margin following the October 7 attack by Hamas. Over a dozen progressive Democrats — and one Republican — voted "nay" or "present." The bipartisan resolution, drafted by Republican Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas and Democratic Rep. Greg Meeks of New York, is a largely symbolic gesture. Furthermore, several progressives have described Israel as an "apartheid state," a description also employed by several international human rights organizations.

Biden has literally, and figuratively, wrapped Netanyahu in a warm embrace since the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas. Biden himself told reporters on his way back from Israel that he had a “long talk” with Israeli officials “about what the alternatives are” to a possible extended ground operation. “At the same time ... Netanyahu and I discussed again yesterday the critical need for Israel to operate by the laws of war. That was followed by more than a dozen lawmakers introducing a resolution urging the Biden administration to call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire. Biden administration officials, meanwhile, in their interactions with their Israeli counterparts have witnessed trauma — and rage — that is palpable.

CNN —Taylor Swift broke sports media when she showed up to the Kansas City Chiefs game on Sunday, seated next to tight end Travis Kelce’s mother, Donna. The outing capped a frenzied period of speculation in which the rumor mill had been working overtime to speculate whether Swift and Kelce were, in fact, an item. Swift has been incredibly vocal about how much she dislikes when people speculate about her dating life. “I feel like watching my dating life has become a bit of a national pastime,” she told Rolling Stone in 2014. “Taylor is very focused on work right now and hanging out with her girlfriends,” a source told People magazine.

While searching for tuna last week, a helicopter pilot spotted something bobbing in the vast blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean, more than 1,200 miles from land. It was a small white catamaran, badly damaged. When a small boat sent by the helicopter caught up with him, he said his name was Timothy Shaddock and that he and his dog, Bella, had been at sea for about three months. He said he had survived in part by fishing for tuna, which he ate raw, and drinking rainwater. On Tuesday, Mr. Shaddock, 54, walked down the gangway of the Maria Delia, the Mexican tuna trawler that had rescued him, and began to recount his remarkable story of survival.

More than 110,000 people are missing in Mexico, their fate uncertain. The figures have become a political sore spot for Mr. López Obrador, particularly as Mexico heads toward a presidential election in 2024, when one of the president’s closest allies is likely to be on the ballot. When Mr. López Obrador came to office in December 2018, he promised to root out the violence convulsing Mexico. The president has defended himself against the alarming numbers by saying his government has gotten better at counting and investigating the missing. “No government had ever taken care of the disappeared as we are doing now,” Mr. López Obrador said last year.

Speaking to reporters in Rome after meetings with his Italian counterpart and Italy’s prime minister, Zelensky said Ukrainian forces were “preparing very seriously.”“There will definitely be very serious steps. Earlier, Zelensky met with Pope Francis, who has been outspoken in his support for an end to the war in Ukraine. “Democrats have a much broader spectrum to cover, from those that are in what I would call the immigration advocacy community, to those who I would consider the pragmatic moderates and everything in between,” Ms. Napolitano said. Ms. Napolitano, who describes herself a pragmatist on immigration, said she had also confronted these tensions as attorney general and governor of Arizona. “There are those who believe sincerely and honestly that the United States should not deport people,” Ms. Napolitano said. And some suggest that moderates in their party are mistakenly ceding ground to Republicans on the issue. “We are allowing, in some cases, Republicans to win the conversation about immigration and asylum seekers,” said Representative Delia Ramirez, a left-leaning Democrat from Chicago, whose mother crossed the border while pregnant with her.
Rome CNN —Pope Francis will allow women to participate and vote for the first time at an upcoming meeting of Catholic bishops in October. The meeting, known as a synod, normally only allows bishops to vote. Pope Francis on Wednesday approved guidelines that will expand participation and voting to include lay people and women. The changes allow for the participation of 70 non-bishop members, of whom 50% should be women, according to the Vatican’s synod office. A synod is a gathering of bishops which takes place at the request of the pope to discuss a particular topic.
